The 80s / entry 01
“A bookcase that has not been decorated. A bookcase that has been contradicted.”
Where the shapes came from, why a group of Italians put kitchen laminate on furniture priced like art, and what else was happening in a decade that managed to be frightening and optimistic at the same time.
Context
A decade in six dates
1980
Memphis is founded in a Milan flat in December. Design gets loud.
1981
MTV signs on and the IBM PC ships. Pictures and computing both go mass market.
1983
Swatch launches. Plastic becomes something you choose rather than settle for.
1985
Live Aid. Sixteen hours, two stadiums, one satellite, and a very large audience.
1986
Chernobyl. The decade learns what its technology costs when it fails.
1989
The Berlin Wall opens and the Game Boy ships. The decade leaves in your pocket.
Surface, not picture
The pattern book
Sottsass drew laminates before he drew furniture. Bacterio, the first of these, is the pattern on the ground of every page here.
